Week 2- The Second Sex

One of the first lines that jumped out at me was:"Indeed, along with the ethical urge of each individual to affirm his subjective existence, there is also the temptation to forgo liberty and become a thing." This is quite a frightening thought, but true on many levels. It ties in to her previous claim that the subordination of women is so ingrained in their collective identity that they cannot break away from it. Apparently women find some degree of comfort in maintaining the status quo. The TV show Greek is a good illustration of this phenomenon through a number of female characters who date certain guys for the version of "maleness" that they represent.Another, fairly controversial, line that drew my attention was:"Similarly, the most mediocre of males feels himself a demigod as compared with women." This relates to her previous remark that throughout history, men have favored their own sex and enacted policies to ensure their domination. She contends that the history of this country has allowed for men of any status to take a certain amount of precedence over all women. I don't have a specific example of this but I believe that in most coed reality TV shows, the men are the dominant players, no matter anyone's status.
